A 38-year-old U.S. Marine based in Okinawa, who was arrested for the alleged rape of a teenage girl in southern Japan, has been released after the girl’s family dropped her criminal complaint against him.

It was not clear whether the release would help defuse popular furor in Japan over the incident, which had led to wide questioning of the military alliance with the United States and the more than 40,000-strong American troop presence here.

TOKYO, Feb 29 (Kyodo) - The Japanese government decided Friday to urge the industrial and other sectors to increase voluntary efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to attain Japan’s emissions cut goal under the Kyoto Protocol and ‘’strictly” check the progress twice a year, government officials said.

Japan got a mixed bag of economic signals when the government reported Friday that January’s core inflation rate remained at its highest level in nearly a decade while consumer spending logged its biggest gain in 3 1/2 years. The jobless rate, meanwhile, stayed at 3.8 percent.
Japan got some disappointing economic news Thursday from figures showing that industrial production dropped more than expected in January and that sales at large-scale retailers declined for the second month.Industrial production — a widely watched indicator in this export-driven economy — fell 2 percent in January from December, worse than the 0.6 percent drop projected by economists.
